Mom of two disabled children here, one of them will never be independent, and she is also medically fragile. Looking to relocate to a community with parents in the same position. Any like that in US?

There are several cohousing communities being developed in FL, NC, SC, CO and WA that want to include families of children with special needs. I just wrote an article on Northstreet Neighborhood and neurodiverse cohousing here: http://www.autismhousingnetwork.org/neurodiverse-cohousing-matter/

One of the BIG issues you will need to explore if you can not private pay for care is if you are considering moving out of state… you can not bring your waiver with you! Make sure whatever state you are exploring has a waiver to meet the needs of your daughter, AND ask how long is the waitlist for that waiver.

The Housing Directory is expanding everyday, so please continue to check back and use the ‘Cohousing’ filter under the ‘Property Types’ category to find more cohousing options: http://www.autismhousingnetwork.org/housing/

Thank you so much, Desiree! Great article! I would love to see us as a family living close to the similar families. We are so isolated.
